I am back with a quasi quick smoke. Although this is a bit longer than the 45 min lunch time smoke I enjoy, this is a good 55 minutes to an hour of smoking time that is perfect for when you don’t have that 1.5 hours of down time to enjoy a Toro or larger. I am also doing a repeat of a line which I believe is the first revisit of a line (other than the Opus X) since the site started. Today I have for you the 601 Green Oscuro in a corona size from EO Brands manufactured by the Garcia Family. You can see what Chris thought of this smoke in the Trunco size here. Back then I left a comment on Chris’ post (this was before I was part of the NTA family) and stated that the Trunco is a top three cigar for me. Now it has been knocked down a bit with some of my new experiences over that past year but it is still a fine smoke. So let’s see if the Corona is as good, or better, than the Trunco and how my tastes for this line vary with Chris’

All right folks. I know I am not here again. But today I have a double whammy. Today I have for you a guest review from our review contest and following this post will be an update to our Troop Donation Program. I will be back for sure next week with the second set of 3 cigars from Roberto Cigars and I have a full line of reviews lined up for the immediate future. In the mean time, lets see how Jaime does with this RP Vintage 1992.
Rocky Patel Vintage 1992 Petit Corona
By Jaime Vives-Rivera

Country of Origin: Honduras
Size: 44 x 4.5
Wrapper: 10 year old Ecuadorian Sumatra
Binder: Mexico
Filler: Dominican Republic and Nicaragua
Price: About a $100.00 per box of 20 ($5.00 per cigar)

Before I start with my review let me say that I do not consider myself an expert, a beginner to intermediate in terms of “palate” at best. I have been smoking cigars daily for about year now. In that period of time I have tried a variety of stogies, all handmade, from budget to premium. This has helped me develop my senses a bit.

In my search for the perfect short smoke I a came across the Rocky Patel Vintage 1992 Petit Corona and let me tell you that this little vitola slapped me in the face. It is box pressed and packed with tobacco. I was surprised at how solid it felt to the touch, and a little worried that this could cause draw and burn problems. Boy was I wrong. The draw was perfect, with a little resistance, the way I like it. The burn was razor sharp leaving behind a light gray ash which was fairly sturdy for such a small cigar, it held for about an inch every time. Also surprising was the fact that it burned for one hour and 5 minutes (timed).

In terms of flavor, that is where this petit corona stands out above the rest. I picked up hints of coffee and unsweetened chocolate flavors with a little spice through the nose during the first half of the cigar (No point doing thirds since is a small size cigar). These stayed pretty consistent during the smoking experience, but during the last half the spice increased a bit. I could feel it in the tongue, palate and through the nose in a good and satisfying way. I liked it so much I burned my fingers a few times trying to nub it. This cigar also produced a LOT of resting smoke with a very pleasant aroma.

Compared to my few experiences with larger sized cigars of this line the complexity and variance in flavors cannot develop the same way, but their essence is there. This is justifiable; again, it is a small cigar. The only negative I can find is the price, about $100.00 for a box of 20. There are a lot of choices in this price range. Would I buy again? most likely. I have a few left and they are perfect for when time is not on my side.

This year was no exception as some people said the ’09 version was the best they have put out in a long time. The Rothschild is a 4.5″ beauty that I have found to be the perfect length for a lunchtime smoke. Let’s see if the flavors stand up to those of the larger vitolas in the line.

Sorry about the video quality. I apparently need to clean my camera lens and pay a bit more attention to where the sun is. Hey, one day I’ll figure all this crap out.

In my search for a great “lunchtime” cigar, I have tried many different “small” cigars from multiple manufacturers. In the beginning I often ran into the same issue when trying these smaller vitolas. Most of the time I really enjoyed the blends in the larger standard formats but felt there was usually something lost in translation in the smaller sizes. After trying a bunch of options, I have come up with a few different sticks that I now keep in my desktop humi at work. Look for a series of “Quick Ash” reviews from me as I will attempt to help you find something that will satisfy the need for a relaxing few moments when everyday life gets in the way of enjoying a full size smoke. We are going to start this series with the Petit Tatuaje. Let’s see how she stands up to her larger siblings.

Also, the video issues with the joint review that Chris and I did on Monday have been resolved. Check it out here and get the details on the San Cristobal Seleccion del Sol as well as our upcoming holiday program.
