Sample #7:
Body (1-5): 2
Fullness of Flavor (1-5): 1
Balance (1-5): 3

Overall impressions: Not much to this one. Smoke was very airy providing only a slight tobacco flavor and not much else. Very light on the palate. Nothing bitter or bad tasting, just nothing there.

Sample #8:
Body (1-5): 4
Fullness of Flavor (1-5): 4
Balance (1-5): 4

Overall impressions: Started off great. Began in the upper medium range and progressed from there. The base flavors were very good with a nice woodiness as the base flavor with a very complimentary earthiness and a developing spice. A very enjoyable coffee component was there in the beginning which was a very nice surprise. All in all a very enjoyable smoke.

Sample #9:
Body (1-5): 4.5
Fullness of Flavor (1-5): 4
Balance (1-5): 4

Overall impressions: Great smoke. Full bodied from the beginning with a ton of nice flavors. This is a spice bomb. The spice hits you in the nose right from the first puff. The base flavor is a nice distinct cedar woodiness with the pepper spice dancing around it along with a tinge of earth and a sweet floral component. This is my kind of smoke.

Today we have for you samples 4-6. So let’s see how these three blends compare to our first three.

Sample #4:
Body (1-5): 2.5
Fullness of Flavor (1-5): 2.5
Balance (1-5): 4

Overall impressions: A mild to medium smoke with an awesome woody flavor with a great spice throughout. A roasted peanut flavor tied the whole thing together. Very enjoyable smoke but not quite as full as we are looking for.

Sample #5:
Body (1-5): 3.5
Fullness of Flavor (1-5): 3
Balance (1-5): 3

Overall impressions: A medium to full bodied smoke that started out rough. Started out bitter but changed quickly to a nice earthy base. This cigar progressed and changed nicely throughout. If we were looking at complexity, this is probably the most complex of the bunch. Spice ramped up throughout and went very well with that earthiness.

Sample #6:
Body (1-5): 3.5
Fullness of Flavor (1-5): 3
Balance (1-5): 3.5

Overall impressions: Another great smoke. Getting more in that full bodied realm. This cigar had that similar woodiness to it that many of Bob’s cigars tend to have and mingled well with a nice pepper spice on the palate. Would like the flavors to be a bit more rich but this stick was still very good and very smooth.

Here we are folks. The first episode of three that will take you through the tasting (and choosing) of a full bodied blend to complete the Roberto Cigars line of premium smokes. If you haven’t already, check out our reviews of Roberto’s Standard (Mild) Blend and his Robust (Medium) Blend.

Today we have for you samples 1-3. I am only providing opening and final impressions for each stick in an effort to keep the video time manageable. I am also doing a full written description for our use in blend selection which I write throughout the entire smoking experience. I will give you a bit of that information at the end of this post most notably a rating for body, fullness of flavor, and balance as well as overall impressions of the smoke. So let’s see how the first three blends do.

**Spoiler Alert**
If you would prefer to watch the video prior to seeing my results then watch now before you read on any further. If you are sick of my ugly mug, then you can just continue on with your reading.

Sample #1:
Body (1-5): 2
Fullness of Flavor: 3
Balance: 3.5

Overall impressions: Mild to Medium bodied smoke that lacked flavor in the beginning. Flavor came into it’s own in the second third with a very nice woodiness and remained that way to the end. There was minimal spice throughout this smoke. This stick reminded me a lot of the Standard Blend. Balance was good but there wasn’t a ton of flavors to balance out.

Sample #2:
Body (1-5): 3
Fullness of Flavor (1-5): 3
Balance (1-5): 2

Overall impressions: Medium in body throughout. Flavors were much more prevalent than #1. There was still a very minimal amount of spice in this smoke. The predominant flavor was the same woodiness I encountered in the first sample but there was a nice background earthiness to this smoke. The balance was a little off in that the flavors were a little edgy and just didn’t meld together perfectly.

Sample #3:
Body (1-5): 4
Fullness of Flavor (1-5): 3.5
Balance (1-5): 3

Overall impressions: Came out swinging with a very nice spice right from the first puff. Flavors throughout fist half were a very nice mixture of leather and earth. Flavors weren’t real deep but easily detectable. Spice mellowed after start but was present throughout the entire stick. Flavors changed slightly in the second half. Leather was still the primary component but the earth faded and gave way to a similar woodiness that was prominent in samples 1 and 2. I enjoyed this stick much more than the first 2 and it was definitely more in that full body range that we are looking for.

Just a couple of tidbits from the site.

First, a huge thanks to all the people who have donated smokes for the troops. As usual the cigar community is comming through large. Also, the manufacturers are being very generous towards the raffle prizes. A big thanks goes out to them as well for thier generosity. Check out the post to see who and what has been donated for prizes thus far. If you haven’t seen the post and haven’t donated to the cause, click here and send something in. These men and women battle for us every day. The least we can do a send them a smoke.

Also, look for the begining of the Roberto Cigars blending series to start on Thursday Dec 3. I will smoke 3 blends a week and give details on those 3 sticks in 1 episode. This way the series will be 3 episodes in length and wont drag out for 6 months. Bob sent out the following email to his subscribers documenting the project:

You will find the announcement at the attached link of particular interest. This is a new series of Roberto Cigar reviews scheduled to begin very soon.

http://nicetightash.com/new-feature-series-coming-soon-to-nice-tight-ash/

The idea behind this project is to both inform cigar aficionados and demonstrate the versatility of Roberto Custom blend cigars. As you can see from the write-up, I provided 9 cigars of various blends to www.nicetightash.com for review. The tobacco comes from the most respected supplier in the United States, grown on their farms in South America. Same tobaccos found in most of the major premium brands including Montecristo, Atruro Fuente, Montecruz, La Flor Dominica and more!

What many people do not realize is that a majority of the finest cigar tobacco only comes from several select sources. the difference in the taste (and the price) comes from the blend itself and the “name” of the cigar.

What we hope to demonstrate in this fascinating series is not just how various types of tobaccos in various combinations effect the cigar, but to showcase Roberto Cigar’s unique ability to custom blend the finest cigars to our customer’s particular tastes.

We hope you enjoy this fine series and provide us the opportunity to prepare a custom blend for you.

Best,
Roberto

Thats it for today folks. Thanks for all yor support, keep checking in with us, and remember…Nothing beats a NICE TIGHT ASH!

Alright ladies and gentlemen, let me first apologize for not having a review for you this week although I’m sure that there are some that are rejoicing in the streets. But I digress. I have been in the process of selling my house and at the time that many of you are reading this I will probably be at the settlement. For anyone who has moved a house without the help of a moving company you know the rigors of getting everything out of your house and to its new, and in my situation temporary, location. The one thing that I got out of this is that I cannot believe how much shit we have accumulated in just 5 short years.

Anyway, although I didn’t have the time to provide a review, we still wanted to give you some cigar related content so you could get your fix for the day. And so…I would like to announce a new feature series that we will be bringing you in the very near future here at Nice Tight Ash.

As many of you know, I came upon some cigars from Roberto Cigars strictly by accident as I was in the process of purchasing a new humidor. Since that time, I have reviewed both of Roberto’s regular offerings, the Standard Blend and the Robust Blend, here on the site. (Since the review, the name of the Robust Blend as been changed to “Medium Blend.”) Check ‘em out if you haven’t already! After the last review, Bob approached me to help him with the blending of a new cigar. I was thrilled about the idea and jumped at the chance.

About 2 weeks ago, Bob informed me that he would be visiting a tobacco supplier and would like to get my thoughts on what I would really like out of a cigar. As a caveat, we both are fully aware that this is just one person’s taste but as we all know, most cigars begin that way. I put allot of thought into what I really enjoy and what I felt would be a great balanced and enjoyable profile as well as what I felt the current cigar market is trending towards. Those thoughts along with the fact that Bob already has very good mild and medium bodied cigars led us to focus the effort on a full bodied blend. Bob took these thoughts and ideas as well as the reviews of his other two blends to the dealer to see what the two of them could come up with.

This brings us to this new feature on Nice Tight Ash. Bob has returned with an array of tobaccos to choose from to build his full bodied blend. Bob is going to provide me with approximately 9 different blends from the tobaccos that he has managed to procure. We have developed a common rating plan that is as subjective as possible and will be used to rank the cigars 1-9 (or how ever many we end up with). During this series, I will be entirely in the dark as to what tobaccos are in each blend and it will be my thoughts on each blend that will be documented. I am hoping to take the viewers of Nice Tight Ash through the process of rating and ranking the blends and the ultimate selection of Bob’s full bodied smoke at which point we will learn the constituents of the blend together. Bob has also talked about the possibility of selecting multiple blends and putting together a sampler pack that would run the gambit from mild to full and would be available to consumers based on this experiment. This would provide you, the viewers of Nice Tight Ash, the opportunity to get your hands on the same smokes that are rated in the series and determine how your tastes compare to mine and provide feedback on whether or not you agree or disagree with our original assessment. This is just a thought at this point and the feasibility of this idea is based on the availability of tobacco but stay tuned.

In closing, I am hoping that this “mini-series” will provide some good entertainment and insight into the cigar world. As always, comments and thoughts on the series are always appreciated. Since the reviews have not yet begun, feel free to provide your thoughts and ideas on our approach and what you would like to see. In fact, I encourage you to let me know what you would like to see me discuss during this process. After all we do this for you the viewer and the more feedback from you, the better the content.

Anyway, that’s it from me today. I’m off to sell a house…but don’t forget folks…Nothin’ beats a Nice Tight Ash!
