Kinky Friedman Kinkycristo
This week, I’m reviewing something a little different. I was gifted a cigar from a friend in Texas made by the unique Kinky Friedman. If you don’t know who Kinky Friedman is, he is a country songwriter, candidate for governor of Texas and a mystery novelist. To those of you that don’t know who Kinky Friedman is, here are some videos from YouTube:

You can also find some of his music on YouTube as well if you search on his name.
A couple years ago, he started producing his own cigars. The cigars are handmade in Honduras with a Habano wrapper, Honduran and Nicaraguan fillers with a binder from Costa Rica. There are several sizes, but one is unique. It’s called the Utopian and it was created to help out Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch, a never-kill animal rescue ranch. All the profits go to this ranch to help the animals. I, personally, think that is a damn fine thing to do. These are 6 sizes currently available:
- Governor – Toro Gordo – 5 3/4 in. x 60
- Kinkycristo – Torpedo – 61/4 in. x 54
- The Willie – Twist Head & Shaggy Foot 6 in. x 48
- Texas Jewboy – Torpedo – 6 in. x 56
- Utopian – Torpedo – 6 in. x 56
- Kinky Lady – Lancero – 6 in. x 42
Today, I’m trying the Kinkycristo, the torpedo vitola. Let’s see how it smokes!
Appearance
The cigar has a very smooth wrapper with no large veins. The tip is well wrapped as well. The tip is more blunt than you normally see on a torpedo. This is a very well constructed cigar.
Pre-Light Aroma
On the draw, I get heavy notes of earth and leather. The wrapper and foot have heavy notes of rich leather.
First Third
The cigar has a great draw and produces a ton of smoke. The flavors I’m picking up are leather with a nutty profile. It has a nice creaminess that really lingers on the finish. You really get heavy cream flavors on the retrohale that matches nicely with the leather and nuts.
Second Third
The second third is much like the first with leather, nuts and a nice creaminess, but something else has entered. I’m getting a nice spice aspect now that reminds of something like nutmeg. It really enhances the flavor. The cigar have a very smooth flavor profile and it really easy smoking.
Last Third
Again, the cigar isn’t changing much but the spice has really diminished. Leather is still the strongest flavor note in the cigar. I’m now getting some coffee on the last third, but it’s more in the background. It does linger on the palette for quite awhile. I’ve had some weird burn spots on the cigar, but I had a real issue on the last third. There was one spot that didn’t burn, but it burned around it and leveled itself out.
Overall Impression
The cigar wasn’t a very complex cigar but the flavor profile was really smooth and flavorful. I would say it’s a really good medium bodied cigar that can be enjoyed any time of the day but would be really good in the afternoon with a cup of coffee. I enjoyed this cigar and I would like to try more of the different sizes, especially the Willie, Kinky Lady and Governor. These are a little hard to find, but you can order samplers from Kinky’s site at Kinky Friedman Cigars. Give them a try and let me know what you think as well.
