“Smoked Up” No.74

Happy Birthday to me!! Today is my birthday and I have been enjoying some good beer, a few fine cigars and one of the best roast beef and gravy poboys I’ve ever ate. Not much else going on, no local cigar events or happenings going on. There is a new tobacco store that recently got new management in town. I hear they have a small selection of cigars, so I may go check it out on Friday.

Cigar Views

AVO LE10

Avo LE10: I got a box of these to age and smoke one on my birthday every year. The smoke seems to be getting more smooth and rounded off than what I remember having last year. I pair it with a Rouge Hazelnut Brown Nectar beer. This was an awesome pairing as I got more chocolate flavors out of the smoke than I usually do. I also got a dry roasted nut flavor on the back half of the draw that was interesting as well. This is one box purchase that I do not regret.

H Upmann Petit Corona Marevas

H Upmann Petit Corona Marevas (Cuban): I don’t smoke too many Cuban cigars as I don’t prefer to bother with the “hassle” of getting them, there are a lot of non-Cubans that are way better and there are probably more fakes than real Cubans sold every day. This one was gifted to me at least four years ago, so I figured it was ready to smoke. Had mellow notes of cedar, a hint of black pepper, a herbal twang and a nice sweetness here and there; all in a smooth form. Great draw and burn as I figured I would have more issues with this cigar for some reason. Overall a good smoke, but like I said previously, there are a lot better cigars if you ask me.

Davidoff Aniversario No3

Davidoff Aniversario No.3: My Sunday Davidoff this week is one from their Aniversario line and was a pretty good smoke. It started off with a light woody note that was followed by a slight citrus zest that gave the wood an almost spicy aspect. It stays pretty consistent until the last third where the citrus zest eases off some and is almost replaced by a extremely smooth black pepper that has a slight bite on the finish. A good cigar that I paired with a cup of  Green Mountain “Black Magic” coffee.

La Aurora 1945 Robusto

La Aurora 1495 Robusto: One of my local shops has these for around $5ea and I always grab one when in there. They are a pretty good medium bodied cigar that’s never let me down. Last weekend Holts had a 10pk of these on their weekend special for $22.50 and I grabbed them up. For $5, these are a good smoke, but for $2.25 they are a great smoke! Notes of coffee, oak and a slight leather on the last part of the draw. For the money, these are a great everyday smoke for me as they don’t break the bank, good flavors and no construction issues.

Drew Estate Nica Rustica

Drew Estate Nica Rustica: This is the third Nica Rustica I have smoked and I am still on the fence on how much I like the cigar. I like the dark, rich, heavy smoky flavors, just not sure how much so. Its a good smoke, don’t get me wrong. It just seems like one minute I really like it and the next its more like “eh…”. The construction was good, the only issue I had was the cap came off half way through the cigar. That seemed to be an issue I always had with DE cigars and I thought they had the issue under control. But this cigar set me back a few steps on that decision. Overall a cigar to try if you like dark, heavy  and “meaty” smokes.
