“Smoked Up” No.86

Finally a break in the hot weather here in the south! I am glad it is here and hopefully the heat is out of the forecast the remainder of the year. The nights are nice and comfortable, so when I am not hanging out with my daughter, I have been trying to get some cigars in. Cooler weather also means I can get in more in-depth cigar reviews. I have been slacking in that department over the last few weeks mainly due to the heat & humidity.

I have a new site sponsor, CigarsCity, who has graciously gave me a few cigars to review. Those reviews will be out in the upcoming weeks as well as some others I have been wanting to get out. Many thanks to CigarsCity for their support of NTA. So show them your support and check out their site. Their prices are comparable to the other “big named” online retailers.

Cigar Views

Romacraft Atlatl

Romacraft Atlatl: I got this cigar a year or so at a Romacraft event. I tucked it away saving it for a cooler day to enjoy. Friday night was just that night. The temperature broke into the 70s and was a fine time for a cigar. Being a lancero feind, this cigar is the right size for me that night. The flavors were not as bold as I figured it would be. I got a little bit of a light wood and even lesser herbal notes. Not much that really wow’d me with the cigar and it almost disappointed me to an extent. I had higher expectations for it, it just didn’t do much for me.

Camacho Criollo Robusto Tubo 1Camacho Criollo Robusto Tubo 2

Camacho Criollo Robusto Tubo: This is the second Criollo of the newly reblended Camacho lines that I have had. The first encounter wasn’t all too pleasurable, but I was going to have it a go with one again later. Later came sooner than I figured when I was contacted by CigarsCity.com to sponsor a few reviews with some cigars. This is one of the cigars they sent me and this was my first look at the tubo before I do a full review in the next week or so. Be on the lookout for a full review to see if I had a better experience with it than before.

Auturo Fuente Magnum R52

Aurturo Fuente Rosado Magnum R52: I adore this cigar over many, if not all Fuente cigars.; even over the highly acclaimed Opus X. Had a firm, but manageable draw, great burn and tight ashes. Had a solid medium body wit nice notes of a white pepper, slight vanilla and a very nice sweetness that I really liked. Not an overly complex cigar but the flavors were solid.

Nica Libre Potentcia Belicoso

Nica Libre Potentia Belicoso:  For a little over $6, this wasn’t a bad smoke. Had a medium to full body with similar strengthened flavors. Nice sweet coffee, with hints of cedar and earth. Nothing award winning about this cigar, but it wasn’t not total junk either. Produced thick clouds of smoke, with tight grayish white ashes and a so-so burn line. I used to smoke a number of the Nica Libre lines as they were an economical every day smoke that reminded me along the lines of a Padron. Not exactly a Padron, but similar flavors. This one was a bit different and had a bit more power.

Puro Vida Honduran Habano Corona: I am not sure if this cigar is for sale yet as it was a sample from a local shop. Puro Vida lines are available in Toro sizes except this corona size. The owner took our advice at a recent tasting of the new Honduran line when we asked for a corona or petite corona in a blend. This cigar has more flavor than the toro ever thought about having. Had notes of a smooth white pepper with very little spice kick to it. As well as a flavor that had a bit of musty sweetness to it that I couldn’t put my finger on, but was a pretty interesting flavor. I paired this cigar with a few fingers of Evan Williams Single Barrel bourbon. For about $25-30, this is a pretty tasty bourbon that won’t break the bank. I suggest you try both either separately or paired.
