“Smoked Up” No.12
It is that time of the week when I tell you about the week’s happenings in my cigar journey through life, plus some news from around the interwebs. We had a glitch in our server last week and thought I had lost a few posts (including the Cuenca Cigars 5 Anniversary review), but we got them back and things are running a little more smoother here. Spring is upon us down here in the south which means more cigar and bbq time for me and my friends. Hope ya’ll up north get some warmer temps soon. I don’t see how ya’ll can take those cold temps and snow!! Enough of my blabbering….
Cigar Views
Puros Indios Special Aged Pyramid: When I first started enjoying cigars, these were a go-to for me. They are inexpensive, good flavors and I got a decent smoke time from them. I got this cigar in December, 2010, so its got 2 more years age than the 6 years the Reyes put on them before sold. Had a slightly thick draw, but a good burn. Had very light creamy wood flavors throughout. For about $1.50, its not a bad or great cigar. I think these peak with a year age as they mellow off too much after that. I think these are good aged between 9months and a year, this one was almost too mild.
La Aurora Escogidos Maduro: This cigar is a staple in my humidor as a good “kick around smoke”. A cigar that has great flavor, yet you won’t be heartbroken if it were to fall in a pile of mud. At one time they were only available at the La Aurora factory, but I am glad they are more readily available outside the factory. For a little around $5, its a good (no-frills) solid tasting cigar. The draw on this one was milkshake thick, but not too thick. Had mainly sweet cedary flavors and a slightly peppery retrohale. A good bang for your buck cigar.
Tatuaje L’Esprit de Vérité 2009 Robusto: One of my favorite Tatuajes ever made. Superior draw & burn with awesome flavors. A creamy woody core that I love. An accompanying black pepper compliments the smoothness of the wood. If you can get your hands on any of these, I highly suggest you get as many as you can. I got a handful left from a box split, I should have bought the whole box!! I have seen a few boxes still out there at $200/box of 10. That is a little too rich for my blood right now though.
Rock-A-Feller Short Torpedo: This is a very little known cigar line thats made in eight sizes. Made by Jeffrey Avo Uvezian, son of the legendary Avo Uvezian and a descendant of the Rockefeller family. The only size I have smoked is the Short Torpedo. I don’t know if its the smaller size or what, but its a good medium bodied smoke. Hearty wood flavors with a hint of a muted black pepper & vanilla here and there in the smoke. Next trip to the B&M, I will be grabbing another size to see which one I like more. But, for right now, the short torpedo is smoking pretty darn good.
Diamond Crown Maximus Maduro Robusto: A dark and semi-sweet charred oak flavor that is quite appealing to me. A hint of brown sugar graces my taste buds here and there throughout the cigar as well. A very smooth and even draw with an impeccable burn. This is one of the few “high end” cigars I will pay the extra few dollars for over my normal sweet spot price point. This cigar is about a year old or so, and they are pretty good fresh or with a little rest on them.
