Ashton VSG Pegasus

If you’ve followed me on Twitter or friended me on Facebook, you have seen this cigar often.  I also have this cigar on my Top Cigars of 2011 list.  I haven’t put a review in yet for it and, honestly, it wasn’t scheduled for this week either, but last week we got word that Manny Ferrero, Senior VP for Ashton, passed away while on the dance floor with his beloved wife, Rose in Mexico.  So as a tribute to Manny, I’ve decided to do the review of the Pegasus now in honor of Manny.  Thanks to The Cigar Shop in Biloxi, MS for the cigars.

Puros Indios Siembra de Oro Short Maduro

Sunday, March 19, 2012 we lost a legend in the cigar industry. Rolando Reyes Sr passed away Sunday in Miami, FL of natural causes at the age of 89. Rolando had been in the cigar industry for 80 years. Yes, do the math, he has been involved in cigars since he was 9 years old! Rolando was very involved in his cigars. He worked mainly at night. “I start at 10 at night, and I’m done at 4 or 5 o’clock in the morning,” he said in the Cigar Aficionado interview. “I am quality control. I like to work at night, because there’s no one to bother me, and I can concentrate better in detail on what’s wrong with a cigar…You have to concentrate. I like to inspect every cigar.”

To pay my repspects to Mr Rolano Reyes Sr. I am going to have a look at the Puros Indios Siembre de Oro Short Maduro.

La Aurora to introduce the 107 Puro Vintage Salomon

March 14, 2012 (Miami, FL) – The 107 is getting a line extension, albeit in a limited edition.  Miami Cigar & Company today announced the cigar that helped re-invent the oldest cigar
factory in the Dominican Republic would be released in a salomon. The La Aurora 107 Salomon will be 7.25 x 52 which was the same size that was used for the Puro Vintage 2003.
Originally released 2 years ago on the 107th Anniversary of La Aurora the 107 consists of a Ecuadorian Sun Grown Wrapper with Dominican binder over filler consisting of Dominican and
Nicaraguan tobacco.  The cigar will be available to limited accounts nationwide. According to Hector Paz, National Sales Manager for Miami Cigar & Company, “We would like to use this limited edition to thank
those retailers who have supported the 107 line since the beginning.”
The cigars which come in boxes of 8 will have a MSRP of $12.00 and are expected to ship to retailers in Mid-June, 2012.

About Miami Cigar & Company
Miami Cigar & Company, founded in 1989, is the exclusive US distributor of La Aurora brands
which include Guillermo Leon & Leon Jimenes. They are also the worldwide distributor of
Tatiana, Don Lino, La Sirena and Nestor Miranda line of cigars.

Ben:  Below is some pictures I took of the 107 Puro Vintage at the Atlanta Tweet Up at Buckhead Cigars.  To me, it took the best of the lancero (smooth spiciness) and the best of the corona (nice creamy sweetness) and merged them into one really good cigar.  The last photo is of Guillermo Leon (aka El Gato Grande), President of La Aurora Cigars, who gave me the cigar to smoke.

Ortega Serie D. No .6 – CONTEST – Win a Ortega Serie D sampler!

Eddie Ortega was part of the duo of EO Brands that make the 601, Murcielago and Cubao cigar lines with partner Erik Espinosa. Late last year, Eddie left EO Brands to create his own cigar company with his first cigar line being the Serie D. Featuring a dark Mexican maduro wrapper with Nicaraguan binder and fillers, this cigar was created to be a high quality cigar at an affordable price. Soon as I could, I ordered a sampler of the cigars from Buckhead Cigars in Atlanta, GA. I immediately smoked each size in about 2 days to find which size I like the best. For me, that was the No. 6. The No. 6 is a petit robusto/rothschild that seemed to really concentrate the flavors and give great smoke volume. The cigar burned great and had flavors of cocoa, leather, raisin, cayanne and cedar with a full body. You can watch the video for a more full review. Also, don’t forget about the contest. You can win a sampler of these cigars (one of each size) by simply:

“Check out the review of the new Ortega Serie D No. 6 at @NiceTightAsh ! http://tinyurl.com/7v9ph8h”

Do all there and you get 3 entries in the contest! Good luck!

UPDATE:  For those that don’t know, Buckhead Cigars does ship.  Their phone number is 404-844-0400, or on Twitter @buckheadcigar and their website:  http://www.askthecigarguys.com/.

Great event.  If one comes to your area, don’t miss it.

Viaje Winter Classic

In the 5th installment of the White Label Project, Viaje introduces a cigar that is the smallest of the series so far.  Called the Winter Classic, this cigar was made for colder months of the year, mainly in the northern states, where the weather shortens a person smoking time.  Because of this, Andre Farkas, the owner of Viaje, wanted to make a cigar that wouldn’t take longer than an hour to smoke, but still be full in flavor.  Here is what he had to say on the Winter Classic:

“I blended WC with the colder states in mind. I wanted something on the smaller side that delivered flavor without being overpowering.” – Andre Farkas

This cigar uses a Nicaraguan Corojo wrapper with a Nicaraguan binder and filler.  The strength of the cigar is medium-full and took me about 45 minutes to smoke.

Davidoff of Geneva announces AVO 86th Anniversary Edition Cigar 2012 “La Trompeta”

Tampa, FL – March 7, 2011 – Cigar icon Avo Uvezian is celebrating his 86th birthday with the release of his Limited Edition Anniversary Cigar, “La Trompeta.” The “86th Anniversary” marks the twelfth annual limited edition release from AVO Cigars, a tradition the legendary cigar composer started to commemorate his 75th birthday.

The new AVO Limited Edition 2012 – ‘La Trompeta’ is a dedication to the Jazz musician and aficionado on his 86th birthday, a coronation of his lifetime work. Decades of Avo Uvezian’s work and passion are united in every single cigar, as well as tradition and established knowledge of the tobacco master, Hendrik Kelner.

Through the subtle balanced Ligero tobaccos and the add-on of Peruvian Seco from exquisite tobacco fields, this special vintage is a medium to full- bodied cigar with complex notes in the aftertaste. The beautiful, slightly oily Ecuador Special Sun Grown wrapper “Seleccion 702” awards this cigar an indescribable spicy and balanced, multi-faceted experience. This cigar converts our thoughts in dreams.

A dark brown lacquered box with rounded edges is covered with a stylish black print of the “Avo silhouette” as a cigar aficionado Avo, as the musician with his trumpet, is radiantly printed with gold foil in the background.

“La Trompeta” presents itself in a majestic and charming cigar format – a brilliant 6 ½ x 54 “Piramide”– the addition of a special feature to pay homage to the jazz trumpet, three small circular cigar leaf cut-outs are placed on the wrapper leaf to resemble “trumpet keys” – limited to 100,000 cigars worldwide with 50,000 cigars for the US market.

“La Trompeta” will be available on March 26th at Select Merchants with a retail price of $15.50 taxes not included.

“La Trompeta” in the US first, in May he will travel on tour through Germany and Switzerland.
